I’m sitting on Ava Mae’s bed in her apartment while she showers. Deciding there is no time like the present, I pull my phone out of my pocket and dial Brody. It rings for what feels like hours before his voicemail finally picks up.

“Hey, man, it’s me. There’s something I’d like to talk to you about. Give me a call when you get this.”

“Was that him?” Ava asks as I’m sliding my phone back into my pocket.

“Yeah, well, not really, no. It was his voicemail. I left him a message.”

She fidgets from one foot to the other; I can tell she’s worried. Holding my hand out for her, she takes it. I guide her to stand between my legs. She rests her hands on my shoulders and I wrap my arms around her waist. “I want him to approve of this, Ava Mae. I really do, but I have to be honest with you. If he doesn’t, it’s his loss. I can’t and I won’t let you go. I just got you.”

“I don’t want to cause problems between the two of you. You shouldn’t have to choose.”

Reaching up, I cup her face with my hand. “Baby, there is no choice. He either accepts that we’re together or he doesn’t. It’s you and me, no matter what.” I study her. I can still see the worry in her eyes. “Do you still want this, Ava Mae? Are you having second thoughts?” I force the words, even though I’m afraid to hear the answer.

“No, but I—” I shush her by placing my index finger over her lips.

“No buts. I want you. I want us, and he needs to understand I would never hurt you. I understand you’re his sister, but you’re my girlfriend.” I grin at her. She laughs, which is a good sign. “There is no choice for me. You’re not some random girl I just met and started dating. You’re the girl I grew up with, the one who’s always been there so close, yet so far away. I can finally reach you.” I slide my hand, which was resting on her back, underneath the hem of her shirt. “I can finally touch you.” Lifting her shirt to bare her toned stomach, I kiss her right above her belly button. “I can finally kiss you. I won’t let him take that from me, from us.” I pull her shirt back down and pull her down onto my lap. “So, no buts. If you still want me, we’re in this together. You and me, Ava Mae.” I press my lips to hers.

I have to break the kiss before I get carried away. “Now, let’s grab you some clothes and your books so we can start our day.”

“Clothes?” she asks.

“Yeah, I was hoping you would spend the weekend with me.”

Her mouth drops open in mock horror. “Nathan Garrison, what would your girlfriend have to say about that?” And just like that, the tension in the air is gone.

Wrapping her in my arms,
